We Canadians are very fortunate to have the largest fresh water resource in the world. A few years ago I attended a seminar at University of Guelph. At that time the experts told us that there was a severe global water shortage There are some pockets in the United States that are also suffering from a shortage of fresh drinking water. The United States is actively seeking access to the these very valuable Canadian non renewable resources.
Unlike the United States, countries in the Middle East, including Israel, have no proximate fresh water resources and have turned to a variety of desalinization methods which are inefficient and expensive. Israel has been desalinating water for a number of years and has become a world leader in this field. Ashkelon is one of the cities in Israel which has been on desalinated drinking water for the last 3 years. I drank some on my last visit and I did not notice any unusual taste. It tasted quite good. Israel has recently hosted a conference for other countries in the Middle East to share their expertise.
