Hair thinning and balding? Your shampoo could be the culprit.

I know that it may seem silly that shampoo could be the cause of thinning, or, in the few cases I’ve seen in my clinic, balding in men, but it’s true. One of the ingredients found in most shampoos on the market is sodium laureth sulphate, or sodium lauryl sulphate (SLES). It is an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent for industrial uses such as car wash soaps, engine degreasers. This is the culprit that causes your hair to fall out. Now that I have your attention: it can cause eye and skin irritation. It can cause rashes. It strips your skin of lipids so that it can’t retain moisture. This information just skims the surface of a dangerous ingredient in our personal care products that is allowed by Health Canada as being “under the limit”.
There are many such dangerous chemicals in skin lotions, makeup, baby products, deodorants, conditioners, etc.
The David Suzuki Foundation is now actively targeting personal care products and is asking the government to explain why it allows dangerous chemicals in these products.
