I love salmon. I would hate to give it up but if AquaBounty Farms,, a company in PEI, gets the go ahead from the FDA we are going to find genetically modified salmon in our supermarkets and that would spell the end of salmon on my table. It is impossible to think that these Frankenfish will be contained and not end up contaminating other farmed fish or wild fish. When GMO crops were given the green light it did not take long to see the effects of these crops insidiously invading the fields of neighbouring farms. It has been disastrous for many farmers whose crops have been taken over by GMOs. We still do not know what the effects will be on us from eating genetically modified vegetables, fruit and now fish. One of the reasons given by proponents of GMO is that the planets natural resources cannot sustain 7 billion human beings and that we need to “farm” living creatures from the sea, and on land, so that we can be fed. That means that the fish farms will have to be self contained and if disease hits one it will spread to all. You can expect that the fish, like other farmed animals, will be fed antibiotics, and other drugs, which will end up in our systems. We are living in very dangerous times. Think about this: Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, according to WHO, the World Health Organization; the fallout from the radiation disaster in Japan will hit British Columbia within the next couple of years; The reality of animal diseases that transfer to humans such as mad cow disease, swine flu, bird flu, have resulted in the killing of hundreds of thousands of cows, pigs, geese and ducks over the last few years; Overabundance of antibiotics have produced super bacteria that are resistant to treatment; Pesticides and herbicides have produced super bugs that are reeking agricultural havoc; over-fishing of our oceans has emptied them and created an ecological disaster for the ecosystem – witness the dead coral reefs throughout the Caribbean and the empty oceans around the world; we are an overmedicated society with obesity in epidemic proportions that has created an industry for diabetes, and heart conditions; we are an over vaccinated people with major chronic illness beginning from infancy; we have more grain in our diet than what our systems can tolerate since it’s introduction 10,000 years ago; we are biological beings that are ingesting vast amounts of chemicals and foreign substances that our biological systems don’t know what to do with and stores it in our bodies. It’s scary.

Here is a thought that might remind those that are familiar with Judeo-Christian biblical history: Before the great flood in the Book of Noah man was vegetarian. It was after the flood that man began to eat meat….perhaps we have to revert to our roots. Who knows? Maybe our lives will be extended and we might even be healthier.
